in-cosmetics Korea returned to the spiritual home of cosmetics innovation last week, recording its largest and most international attendance since its inception in 2015.

Coming to a close in Seoul, South Korea on 14 July, the event attracted 10,823 unique visitors – a 27% increase on the previous year – for three days of unrivalled knowledge sharing, ingredient sourcing, and networking with industry pioneers and experts.

Sarah Gibson, Exhibition Director at in-cosmetics Korea said: “Our events are built on science-backed research, the latest market insights, and industry-wide analysis. This year’s show floor and event programme directly reflected the Korean, Japanese, and clean beauty trends shaping global markets, ensuring that our visitors remain at the forefront of this rapidly evolving industry.

“Each theatre, zone and corner of the event were packed with enthused visitors in a way like never before, and the diversity reflected in attendees and scientific offerings alike is testament to the meticulous, laser-sharp focus the show has in APAC cosmetic ingredient trends. With 95% of next year’s exhibition space sold already, in-cosmetics Korea is showing no signs of slowing – and we look forward to returning next year with even more scientific knowledge and innovation.”

The most diverse show yet

Demonstrating the event’s global focus, 56% of the 281 ingredient suppliers and manufacturers and one in 10 visitors (13%) to the event had travelled from outside Korea.

Laura Bertrand, Business Development Manager at Microphyt, a new exhibitor to the Natural Extract Zone hailing from France, said: “We came here to discover the Korean market and seek a local partner. From the high quality and quantity of visitors, in-cosmetics Korea has been an incredibly positive experience for us.”

May Yuan, from China-based Suzhou Sunland Pharmatech, added: “This year’s show far exceeded my expectations and has presented us with a myriad of new projects and opportunities with great potential for us. It’s all been very exciting and could not have been better.”

What’s trending?

The K-Beauty Inspiration Zone and Natural Extract Zone provided the perfect platforms for formulators and cosmetic scientists to identify the most prominent trends. The former shone a spotlight on K-Beauty innovations – featuring 21 new Korean products launched in the APAC region in the last two years. Attendees found cutting edge products and formulations from the likes of Clio and Dr. Jart., which inspired visitors with their unique ingredients and novel packaging. Importantly, they allowed R&D teams to easily identify the hero ingredients that will enable them make their finished product a true success.

The latter premiered at this year’s show, honing in on sustainability against the backdrop of rising clean and green beauty trends. As more brands and consumers alike look to replace synthetic ingredients with natural variants, the zone welcomed suppliers from across the South Korean market and beyond, including Shebah Biotech, Metrochem Co. SIDBIO, Florihana, and more.

Pranchalee Khaja, visitor and Co-founder of Thailand-based Friends of Busabar, said: “For us, Korean beauty products are some of the best in the industry, so naturally, we come here to learn from the best in the world and the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone surpassed our expectations. The show is incredibly impressive and professional, and we did not expect to walk away with so many new suppliers and partners!

Danitza Irahola, CEO of Braver Beauty in Chile, said: “[in-cosmetics Korea] is a great melting pot of information, knowledge and inspiration of the cosmetic world. We work with some of the top products in Korea, so the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone was a great place to get to know these much better.”

The Marketing Trends and Regulation Seminars brought together leaders in the space, including Euromonitor International, Shiseido, and Mintel, who presented their latest data on global consumer trends. The former identified the top 20 emerging and fast-moving consumer trends expected to gain traction in the coming year, while the latter provided a deep dive into Japanese beauty trends.

BASF also presented an extremely valuable and well-attended technical seminar on bioactives, introducing its research capabilities and vast portfolio of bioactive ingredients as well as its special innovation focus on peptides.

An occasion to celebrate

To celebrate the abundance of cutting-edge ingredients and formulations on display at the event, the in-cosmetics Korea Best Ingredient Awards returned for a show-stopping afternoon. The esteemed panel of judges awarded GATTEFOSSÉ with the Functional Category Winner accolade for its Emulium Demolea MB, a versatile ingredient that reduces skin stress and promotes long-term soothing.

In the Active Category, Givaudan took home the Gold Award for its PrimalHyal™ Hydra[+], an ingredient which presents an innovative way to bring the popular hyaluronic acid into rinse-off skincare. Silver was awarded to RAHN-Group’s PERFELINE®-FIT, a biomimetic way to strengthen the micro-vessels in human skin.

The Bronze Award was presented to joint winners, Vytrus Biotech for its PHOTOBIOME – the microbiota photoprotector, and TriBeaute Inc. for its RedoxySense™ W. The full list of this year’s winners and product information can be seen  .

in-cosmetics Korea will return next year from 24-26 July at the Coex Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, South Korea. For more information and to register to attend, visit here. For more information on exhibiting next year, visit here.

To have Korean ‘glass’ skin is the epitome of beauty in the east – so much so this ideal is also highly sought after in the west. Glass skin appears perfectly clear without blemishes or pores and is incredibly radiant. This blog explains how to formulate Korean skincare to achieve the ideal glass skin.

Another place to get insights on the latest K-Beauty trends is at in-cosmetics Korea. Happening in Seoul on 12-14th July and featuring the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone, it will give you more in-depth knowledge into K-Beauty and its trends.

Essential Korean cosmetic ingredients

Reputable skincare brands in Korea contain a host of traditional and modern active ingredients. Some of these hail benefits from traditional Korean medicine, but all have very natural origins. To harness the essence of Korean skincare, make sure your cosmetic formulas contain at least a few of these ingredients:

  • Korean ginseng extract – also known as Panax ginseng, this ancient root goes back millennia in traditional Korean medicine for a myriad of benefits. Korean ginseng extract is most widely used in leave on skincare for its anti-ageing benefits, as it helps reduce fine lines and brighten the appearance of the skin for a more youthful appearance. Learn how to add liquid herbal extracts to formulas with this video.
  • Licorice root extract – another plant extract with its origins in traditional Eastern medicine, licorice root is a favourite in Korean skincare for its skin lightening, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory results. Look for extracts particularly rich in glycyrrhizic acid for the most potent benefits; and layer it in a few leave on products for outstanding visible effects. Some licorice extract comes in a powdered form; watch how to add powdered extracts to formulas with this video.
  • Gotu kola extract – also known as Centella asiatica extract, this is yet another herbal extract with traditions in medicine. In skin care, gotu kola is used for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits to calm and sooth the skin – an ideal ingredient to help achieve the appearance of glass skin.
  • Yuza (yuja) extract – sourced from the pristine Jeju island, yuza extract is extremely rich in vitamin C for skin lightening and softening benefits. This is an important ingredient in serums or moisturisers as part of an overall skin care regime.
  • Snail mucin (also listed as snail secretion filtrate) – rich in hydrolysed glycosaminoglycans, this highly purified filtrate is a favourite amongst Koreans for its hydrating and suppleness benefits. Its skin plumping and luminosity results can be seen almost immediately and can even boost delivery of other actives.
  • Rice water – ideal to replace some of the water in a formulation, rice water boasts significant skin toning and firming benefits. It is ideal for pore refining in micellar cleansing and serum formulas. Get inspiration from our video rice milk micellar cleanser.
  • Bamboo water, extract or exfoliant – bamboo water and extract both refine the pores and soothe the skin for a luminous complexion; while finely ground bamboo gives a delightfully soft but effective exfoliating polish, just perfect to make that glass skin perfectly smooth.
  • Pearl extract – what is more luminous and perfect than a pearl? Pearl extract is rich in minerals to provide the same visible results in skincare.
  • Propolis – sourced naturally from beehives, this important structuring and anti-bacterial ingredient is a nutrient powerhouse with multiple benefits for the skin. At least one of the products in your Korean skincare range should contain this multi-active ingredient.

Other ingredients your Korean skincare formulas will benefit from include:

The skincare products needed for Korean glass skin

Korean skincare routines contain a long list of products for a layered approach. Make sure the selection of actives and ingredients in your cosmetic formulas delivers just the right amount of each for the best results.

  1. The double cleanse:
    1. the first cleanse is an oil-based balm or serum to remove make up and stubborn pollutants. Watch how to make natural cleansing oils and balms with this video.
    2. the second cleanse is to remove any oily residues and ensure pores are open for a deep clean. Watch how to create a gentle but deep cleansing micellar cleansing foam here.
  2. Exfoliate: use a crème based exfoliant with a natural exfoliating ingredient. Watch this video for a variety of natural exfoliant ingredients.
  3. Toner: the toner should provide instant tightening and pore refining benefits; rice water is an ideal addition here.
  4. Serum: the serum could be a non-greasy oil based serum, but would more commonly be a water based serum formula with an active mentioned at the start of this article to lay the foundation of hydration. The serum should leave the skin looking dewy but without residue, as more products are yet to be applied.
  5. Moisturise: the moisturiser should be a very light gel-cream formula packed with hydrating and skin lightening benefits. Products for more mature skin should promote anti-ageing and skin lightening benefits. The moisturiser is all about bringing the glow to the skin without greasiness.
  6. Sunscreen: an SPF protective product is essential for day use, to reduce any tanning or damaging impact of the sun. Koreans admire light, luminous skin – UV is the enemy of this goal! Read our overview of how to make sunscreen formulas here.
  7. Face masks: a staple in the Korean skincare routine, face masks are used to enhance the hydrating, lightening and perfecting effects of the other products in your range. Face masks are typically used three times a week, or sometimes more; and the traditional sheet mask is slowly being replaced by the more environmentally friendly sleep-in mask.

Koreans are also quite playful with their skincare – so they may look for funky or different product forms for the above products. Watch this playlist for some fun and creative skincare formulas to really wow your target market with different product formula solutions for their skincare needs.

Korean skincare is all about hydrating and caring for the skin – you won’t see harsh or powerful chemical peels in their routines! Instead, their layering effect is designed to soothe and comfort the skin with the right actives for a gentle yet effective brightening and luminosity results.

Bring glass skin results to women all over the world with these ingredient and formulating tips.

Happy formulating!

20 April: in-cosmetics Korea, the only exhibition dedicated to personal care ingredients in South Korea, is set to return to Seoul this year for what is expected to be the biggest and most international event yet.

The highly anticipated show, taking place in Hall C, at Coex in Seoul, South Korea from 12-14 July, is set to welcome more than 200 leading personal care ingredient suppliers, including ProCell Therapeutics, Nanjing Cosmos and Samkwang Chem Corp and over 9,000 attendees from South Korea and across the world.

Furthermore, with all-new exciting initiatives including the Natural Extract Zone, and a Country Focus on Japan, the show will provide a perfect platform for R&D professionals, chemists, researchers, scientists, and marketing experts to collaborate, network, and learn about future industry trends.

Widely regarded as the bedrock of global beauty trends, South Korea is recognised for its dynamic and highly influential cosmetics and personal care market. And, despite challenging market conditions in recent years, research published by GlobalData anticipates the South Korean skincare market is projected to expand from KRW9.7 trillion ($8.5 billion) in 2021 to KRW12.8 trillion ($11.4 billion) by 2026 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%[1]. Meanwhile, the country holds its position as the world’s third-largest cosmetics exporter with its trade surplus exceeding $6 billion for the first time in 2020[2].

Demonstrating how it continues to lead the global cosmetic and personal care industry, in-cosmetics Korea 2023 will bring the entire ingredients supply chain together, placing an emphasis on interactivity and new formulation techniques through the show’s exciting line-up of local suppliers, its carefully curated educational programme, and interactive areas.

New for 2023: Country focus – Japan

As Asia Pacific (APAC) holds its position at the forefront of the world’s beauty innovation, this year’s show will take a deep dive into what Japan and the growing J-Beauty market has to offer. Attendees will have the unrivalled opportunity to meet Japanese suppliers face-to-face and explore their ingredients, formulations, and trends.

From live ingredient demonstrations in the dedicated Japanese Pavilion, an exclusive keynote session from Shiseido Japan, and dedicated Technical Seminars – where leaders in J-Beauty including Nikko Group, Ajinomoto Health Supply, Seiwa Kasei, TriBeaute and more are set to host sessions – the country focus on Japan will both inspire and educate.

Over in the Exhibitor’s Recommendation area of the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone, Japanese ingredients, especially for the use in products on the Korean market, will be presented by Vitamin C60, Nippon Fine Chemical, and many others.

Natural Extract Zone

Another new feature for 2023 will see a focus on clean beauty and sustainability. The new Natural Extract Zone will demonstrate how natural ingredients play a key role in these trends, as brands and consumers look to replace synthetic ingredients with natural variants. The zone will welcome natural extract and essential oil suppliers from across the South Korea market and beyond, including Shebah Biotech, Metrochem Co. SIDBIO, Micophyt, Plantus, JC Buck and Florihana.

Finding inspiration from local trends

Since its launch in 2019, the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone has been an iconic focal point of the show, with Korean and international researchers gathering to get the latest and most unique insights into K-Beauty. This year, the popular show area will be split into two dedicated zones: the Product Showcase and the Open Theatre.

In this year’s Product Showcase, attendees can test and try the top 21 most innovative K-Beauty products, carefully selected and analysed by Mintel. The isolated hero ingredients of each product will be highlighted by the show’s Technical Advisor, Lorna Radford, and made available to visitors to test and try on stand. Meanwhile, the Open Theatre will host multiple sessions where exhibitors will be invited to demonstrate their formulations in a lab setting – offering visitors an interactive way to learn directly from expert formulators.

Innovation Zone

Another long-awaited area at the show, the Innovation Zone will return as a pivotal hub for R&D professionals to learn and be inspired by newly launched ingredients, while the Marketing Trends & Regulations Seminars will offer a deep dive into the hottest marketing trends, with specialist talks presented by industry experts Mintel Japan, Shiseido Japan, and Euromonitor. Elsewhere, Technical Seminars will also welcome BASF, ACTIVON, and Daebong Life Science amongst others to share insights into the latest product formulations and innovative solutions.

Speaking about this year’s event, Sarah Gibson, Exhibition Director, in-cosmetics Korea, said: “Asa Korean cosmetic products and K-Beauty continue to rise in popularity amongst consumers worldwide, in-cosmetics Korea has an advantageous position to highlight the cutting-edge innovations happening behind the scenes.

“With a special country focus on Japan’s historic progress in this space, and the lifting of travel restrictions, we look forward to introducing this year’s show which is anticipated to be our biggest year – 34% up on 2022 and growing! We can’t wait to welcome attendees from South Korea and beyond to the thriving city of Seoul to celebrate excellence in the field of ingredient innovation.”

in-cosmetics Korea will take place from 12-14 July 2023 at the Coex Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, South Korea. For more information and to register to attend, visit here.

South Korea is one of the top 10 beauty markets in the world, known for innovation, gentle ingredients, and pleasing packaging.

in-cosmetics Korea will hold a session with Mintel in the Marketing Trends Theatre to discuss in person the latest innovation trends hitting the South Korean market. Make sure you register to attend to get these insights directly from the source.

In the meantime, we will share our views on innovative trends in skincare, colour cosmetics and hair care products in the following sections.

South Korean Colour Cosmetics

Lead the vegan makeup trend in South

Vegan makeup products are seeing growth as consumers’ interest increases. In addition, the vegan movement has potential to grow even more in the South Korean colour cosmetic market, considering current ethical and health trends and the consolidated success of vegan launches in Western markets. South Korean beauty trends resonate well with global markets.

It’s time to offer new products and brands to conscious consumers, and brands need to suggest vegan alternatives across subcategories, including tools.

Embrace eco-packaging as the norm

Although Western markets like the US and UK are leading in eco-friendly colour cosmetics packaging, South Korea showed strong growth between August 2021 and July 2022, compared to the previous year. The eco-friendly makeup trend in the South Korean market is rapidly catching up with Western markets.

Brands cannot afford to delay with packaging innovation and materials, as sustainability will become a must-have in the next couple of years; this will start with packaging.

Brands need to display their eco-friendliness with certifications or by applying new technologies.

Drive visibility and impulse lip colour purchases

Even during the pandemic, limited edition lip colour launches have shown steady growth and are positioned as an item that provides ‘sohwakhaeng’*.

Mintel Global New Products Database (GNPD) shows that 14% of lip colour launches between Aug 2021-Jul 2022 carried a limited edition claim – up from 8% in the 2018-19 period in South Korea market.

Actually, Sohwakhaeng is a trending term in South Korea. Meaning “a small but certain happiness”, it describes how a small piece of happiness can be found in daily life. A unique and collectable lip colour can bring sohwakhaeng to South Koreans.

Brands need to offer unique limited editions inspired by legendary products, collaborations with artists, and charities.

South Korean Skincare

Enhance the skin barrier

South Korean consumers want to protect or enhance the skin’s barrier, and skin barrier claims are mainstreaming in the skincare market.

Mintel Global New Products Database(GNPD) reveals that there has been a notable rise in the use of microbiome technology and pre/probiotics in facial care launches which claim to care for the skin’s barrier, and such innovation is expected to continue growing in South Korea’s skincare market.

Innovate new active ingredients and/or technologies, including microbiome care, to lead the market.

Go beyond just UV screening

In fact, sun care NPD with anti-ageing, whitening and reduction of fine line/wrinkles claims is increasing. New protective claims are also being added, eg blue light, IR and pollution. Plus, 8% of new sun care launches in 2021 in South Korea carried a blue light claim, a doubling compared to 2019 (4%). It is time to develop new protection claims, eg blue light, and propose these to sun care consumers.

Advance with hero ingredients

Although South Korea’s body care category is small in size, high growth is expected as body care transforms into an ingredient-driven market, similar to facial care

Body care is evolving into an ingredient-led category similar to facial care in South Korea. Hero Ingredients including sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, ceramide and niacinamide, amongst others, and their use is growing rapidly in body care launches.

Ingredients that are currently trending in facial care are highly likely to gain imminent popularity in body care. It is essential to pay attention to the on-trend ingredients appearing in facial care and quickly incorporate these into body care NPD.

South Korean Haircare

Cover grey hair with innovative shampoo

Shampoos that cover grey hair are buzzing in South Korea. They claim to cover grey hair gradually and safely after a few weeks of use. There is an opportunity to explore this newly growing market and promote the safe and efficacious formulation of these products.

Some consumers have concerns about the safety of hair colourants, such as skin irritation, and have been looking for a safe way to cover their grey hair.

Since 2021, grey hair-covering shampoos have been highlighted, appealing to consumers who have concerns about irritation from dye products on the market.

Lead the waterless movement in SK

Mintel’s 2025 BPC Trend Water – the new luxury outlines the importance of water-free haircare options due to global climate concerns.

The recent surge of waterless formats like bar and solid in the South Korean haircare market is outstanding and waterless haircare is expected to grow further in every haircare segment.

37% of South Korean women* would be willing to spend more on a beauty or grooming product that is environmentally friendly. Meanwhile, eco-minded solid formats are also rising and evolving in global market, as described in the Mintel Report, A year of innovation in haircare, styling & colour, 2021.

It’s time to offer a variety of waterless haircare to engage with eco-conscious South Korean consumers.

Focus on customisation

Customisation in haircare is not so active in South Korea, as brands tend to start offering customisable beauty in bigger categories like skincare. But high consumer interest will lead to growth in this category.

49% of South Korean women are interested in BPC product concepts that have custom formulas suitable for their skin/hair type*.

Brands need to explore customisable haircare, including addressing different hair types, bespoke hair colourants, etc, while to utilise up-to-date technologies to lead the future of haircare.

Register your interest to come to in-cosmetics Korea and see these products for yourself.

  • Clean beauty, vegan beauty, ingredients synchronizing with the circadian rhythm and mineral & synthetic ingredients were the biggest trends.*
  • Best Ingredient Award for Innovation Zone glory went to Greentech, IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, Ashland and Carbonwave.
  • Insights into APAC cosmetic regulation updates and trends such as ageing, the effect ingredients have on consumers’ purchasing habits and sustainable beauty were shared.
  • Invaluable interaction between 202 suppliers from 18 countries and 9,792 personal care creators in total (unique visitors 8,519)

Following on from three days of personal care ingredient sourcing, sharing of formulation techniques and education sessions about the trends shaping the global cosmetic industry, visitors and exhibitors alike praised the action-packed event that took place at Coex in Seoul.

8,519 unique visitors and 9,792 visitors in total (including re-visits) – including 10% overseas attendees from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and India, and 90% from Korea represented by the likes of LG, AmorePacific, Cosmax and Kolmar Korea,  flocked to in-cosmetics Korea on 13-15 July.

The domestic Korean market is slowly but surely recovering from Covid. Indeed, beauty and personal care sales are forecast to reach US$12.7 billion in 2022, i.e. a 6% increase vs 2021**. But, with top cosmetic manufacturers in the country reported to be launching a staggering 20 to 30 new products every month (vs up to 30 a year in Western Europe!)***, there is relentless pressure on local formulators to seek out new ingredients to make their brands shine and boost their company’s market share.

To respond to this demand and support visitors’ NPD requirements, global leading raw material suppliers such as Ashland, Guangzhou Tinci, DSM, Evonik, Merck, Nouryon and SEPPIC amongst others were on hand to support and engage in conversation.

In addition to a strong presence of Korean suppliers such as ActivOn, Biosolution, Cosfine and Dabong LS, first time exhibitors from across the world such as Abich, Cellicon Lab, Uni-powder made their debut into the Korean market.

A hotbed of innovation – and deserved recognition!

Yet again, one of the most popular areas of the show was the Innovation Zone, which showcased 23 new ingredients released onto the market in 2022. Out of these, 4 ingredients came up top and were crowned best active and functional ingredients as judged by a panel of 8 experts coming from manufacture of finished products, market research agency and academy.

The ‘Best Ingredient Awards’ gives recognition to companies whose ingredient launches combine innovative science and product features that provide substantial benefits to manufacturers and to end-users when compared to existing ones.

In the Actives category, Myralys by Greentech, a unique ingredient that addresses the challenging area of Face-Eye won First Place. Wastar Pink Berry by IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics was runner-up with a product that uniquely targets to resolve the specific demand of the market as upcycling concepts continue to trend in the development of new skincare technology.

In the Functional category, Antaron soja glyceride by Ashland, a naturally derived ingredient with great applicability and positive sensorial experience was co-winner along with SeaBalance 2000 by Carbonwave an emulsification stabilizer that can be emulsified alone even with seaweed-derived emulsifier, oil polarity compatibility, a wide range of viscosity and pH, sustainability and a silky sensory feel.

K-beauty inspiration; Korean beauty is all about customization and the country’s cosmetic ingredients are innovative and inspired by nature in a way unique to Korea.

Whilst under pressure from re-energised C-beauty and J-beauty, K-beauty still fires consumers’ imagination across the globe, hence why it took pride of place at in-cosmetics Korea. On show in the K-beauty Inspiration Zone were top-10 product showcases as well as live demos by global market research agency Mintel about the impact of K-beauty products across the region plus talks about trends and concepts, such as clean beauty, sustainability and ‘skinification’ makeup. P

Product showcases presented the popular products across the APAC region and were highlighted with marketing and technical insight.  Also, part of the programme were seminars on the ‘Future Trends of K-Beauty’ and the factors affecting it, from the limitation of natural resources, and the need for brands to explore lab-grown or natural-identical ingredients, to create more sustainability in the future facial care category.

Educational programmes: Korea’s ability to adapt and learn from global trends

Still as popular as ever with in-cosmetics Korea visitors, the event’s acclaimed marketing trends and regulations seminars and technical seminars shone a light on fundamental but also new topics. Korea’s Beauty Consumer Trends in the Post-Pandemic Era by director Pi and APAC cosmetic regulation updates by Reach24H Korea were the most popular marketing trends and regulation seminar sessions.

Natural ingredients for your sensitized skin by The Garden of Naturalsolution and  First-in-class Transdermal delivery technology, PermeaCell™ by Cellicon Lab Inc. was a big hit in the Technical Seminars programme.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director, in-cosmetics Korea, commented: “The show has firmly bounced back to a pre-pandemic level and I’m pleased it has brought the personal care community together in the centre of K-beauty where it continues to flourish at its root.

in-cosmetics Korea is not only the information source for big manufacturers but also for indie brands and entrepreneurs setting out to start a business in this competitive market. This year, more visitors from emerging markets such as Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines attended”.

in-cosmetics Korea will be returning to Coex, Seoul on 12-14 July 2023. For more information about the show visit www.in-cosmetics.com/korea

in-cosmetics Korea, the only personal care ingredients exhibition in Korea, will be held from 13 to 15 July 2022 at COEX in Seoul. With less than two week left until the event, the latest details about the zones and seminars have now been revealed.

Innovation Zone for new ingredients

Global leading raw material suppliers such as Adeka, Ashland, Cell Mark, DKSH, DSM, Evonik, Merck and SEPPIC as well as domestic companies such as ActivOn, Biosolution, Daebong LS, and Cosfine will be participating this year.

in-cosmetics Korea specializes in the raw ingredients and formulation of personal care products. It also has multiple seminars on marketing trends and regulations as well as technical seminars on formulations and solutions. These are presented by industry experts and will have the latest updates and information on the personal care industry.

Among the special programmes that can only be found at in-cosmetics Korea, the Innovation Zone showcases 23 new ingredients released from January of this year until the start of the exhibition. Here are a few of the highlighted ingredients:

  • Carbonwave, a company which is participating for the first time this year, will introduce ‘SeaBalance 2000’, a cosmetic emulsifier which is extracted from seaweed for the first time in the world, and launched in April.
  • ‘METAexosome L55’ by J2KBIO’s, released in May, is a nano-sized exosome directly separated from lactic acid bacteria, and has the effect of improving the skin barrier and healing wounds.
  • MYRALYS by GREENTECH contains a COSMOS-certified active ingredient and high-purity gentiopicroside extracted from wild yellow gentian roots, which makes possible 360-degree care around the eyes.
  • IBR-SOLAGE™ by IFF-Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, which suppresses Glyc-Aging™ by a colourless, fat-soluble microalgae purification extract and supplies a unique multi-functional solution to the skin.
  • ‘Calybiota® Bio’ by Laboratoires Expanscience, which is 100% natural and COSMOS certified.
  •  ‘Caressense™ biofunctional’ by Ashland Singapore, which is a plant fermented extract of organic jasmine flowers harvested in a sustainable way in Provence, France.

The Innovation Zone is unique because visitors can see these new ingredients in person and selected entries will also come with a formulation display, allowing you to put the ingredient to the test right on the show floor.

The Innovation Zone is sponsored by Gattefossé, with The K Beauty Science as a media partner and in partnership with REACH24H.

The ‘Best Ingredient Awards’ will be held at 4:30 pm on Wednesday 13 July and will give recognition to companies that have released ingredients that combine innovative science and product features in a way that demonstrates substantial benefits to manufacturers and to end-users when compared to existing ingredients.

Also, South Korea is one of the world’s fastest-changing beauty markets. It introduces industry-leading innovations and sets global trends, and the K-Beauty Inspiration Zone is where visitors can go to find out about everything K-Beauty, in one place.

All the K-beauty products are carefully selected and curated by global marketing research company Mintel. Visitors can find out about the impact of K-beauty products across the region and browse the most inspired make-up and skincare products with clear marketing and technical insights explained.

As well as the top-10 product showcase, there will be live demos by Mintel about the impact of K-beauty products across the region, with presentations about trends and concepts, such as clean beauty, sustainability and ‘skinificated’ makeup.

There will also be open seminars on the ‘Future Trends of K-Beauty’, which will introduce the global trends in each category that will impact K-beauty in the future. Climate change and the limitation of natural resources would be challenges for natural ingredient harvesting, brands will explore lab-grown or natural-identical ingredients more and create a new sustainability story of the future facial care.

Admission to ‘in-cosmetics Korea 2022’ is free of charge for those who pre-register online and will close at 6pm on 11 July. Then onsite registration from 13 July will be charged at US$20.

in-cosmetics Korea, the only exhibition dedicated to personal care ingredients in Korea (Seoul, 13-15 July 2022) has just unveiled its 2022 educational programme, focusing on “new in” topics.

According to the 2021 Cosmetics Import and Export Trend analysis released by the Foundation of the Korea Cosmetic Industry Institute, Korea’s cosmetics exports totalled $9.22 billion in 2021, a 21.8% jump compared to the previous year. Exports hit an all-time high and add up to an 86% increase over the past five years with an average annual growth rate of 16.7% during the same period.

The dominance and reputation of Korean cosmetics in the global market is peaking as the country ranks as the third-largest exporter of cosmetics worldwide. Korean beauty is all about customization and the country’s cosmetic ingredients are innovative and inspired by nature in a way unique to Korea.

Showcasing these remarkable domestic developments – but also Korea’s ability to adapt and learn from global trends – in-cosmetics Korea’s seminar programme will provide insights on key topics never covered at its trade show in Seoul before.

The event’s marketing trends and regulation programme will tackle digital strategy, sustainability and consumer data insights. Also on the agenda are breaking into the Chinese e-commerce market, waterless beauty, the future of gender fluidity in beauty and personal care, hero ingredients in Korean skincare, not to forget microbiome formulation with presentations by the likes of the NPD Group, Cosmetics Design Asia, Fashion Snoops, BEAUTYSTREAMS and Galinee as well as Korean experts.

As a bonus, on the first day of the show, Director Pi (Hyun Jung Pi, President), YouTube Creator & Cosmetic Entrepreneur on the “Director Pi” channel, which boasts 960,000 subscribers, will share her fascinating insights into beauty consumers.

Still on day one, Seongmin (Mike) Sohn, president of REACH24H, a global regulatory response consulting group, will present on “Chinese cosmetics regulatory updates on ingredients safety and efficacy claims,” while researcher Hyojin Jung will zero in on  APAC cosmetics regulation updates for 2021-2022, in a session designed to enlighten brands keen on exporting to Asian markets, including China.

On day 2, Zeehyun Choi, a researcher from the Korea Consumer Research Institute, will offer his critical view on green, vegan, and sustainability trends in the beauty industry.

On day 3, Amanda Lim, the editor-in-chief of Cosmetics Design Asia will discuss waterless beauty whilst Mallory Huron, beauty and wellness strategist at Fashion Snoops will be focusing on ‘the Future of gender fluidity’.

Also very much worth attending on the same day will be a session on the critical topic of How is the market for personal care ingredients recovering from Covid and what will be the “new normal”? by Kunal Mahajan at Kline.

Meanwhile, more than 15 technical seminars delivered by exhibiting ingredient suppliers will provide an opportunity to discover new approaches to the product development side of cosmetics, many featuring their ingredients.

Topics of interest range from peptide manufacturing and the green revolution from Bachem, Switzerland, sustainable fermentation skincare solution using probiotics from Bloomage Biotech, China, the efficacy and market trends of Ectoin® natural, a single bio-reactive solely made of protein from Bitop AG, Germany, a botanical soothing agent that softens skin and scalp by Roquette, France.

All seminars are free to attend (but available on a first come, first serve basis) for visitors registered for the show whilst presentations will be a combination of in-person and some live streamed.

To register for the show, visit the in-cosmetics Korea website.

From 15 to 19 June, a series of in-cosmetics Korea webinars themed “Educational Week” covered a diverse range of topics, with Givaudan, Lubrizol, Nikko Chemical, LipoTrue and Cargill Beauty APAC among those that discussed their newest ingredient launches as well as scientific advances and local and global trends.

Five trending Korean market topics

Each day of in-cosmetics Korea Educational Week focused on a different theme:

Industry Insights Day:
Representatives from Kline, Mintel and UL Prospector took a deep dive into the market trends impacting the Korean cosmetics industry. They presented the latest consumer research on active and functional ingredients, delivering advice on intelligent product design and compliance, as well as providing examples of Chinese beauty brands putting innovation first.

Clean Beauty:

Presentations from Cargill Beauty APAC, BEAUTYSTREAMS and Lipoid Kosmetik highlighted the trends driving clean beauty concepts and the role of storytelling strategies in helping re-interpret the ‘green’ trend for consumers.

Trends and Innovation:
REACH24H, Euromonitor and Nikko Chemical helped attendees understand the landscape of all major cosmetic policy activity across the Asia-Pacific region, and the top trends driving industry growth.

Skin Sensitivity:
With environmental pollution and excessive screen time negatively affecting skin conditions, Sequential Skin, Seppic Asia and LipoTrue joined the programme. They profiled personalised beauty prescriptions and new dermo-cosmetic actives that provide beneficial properties for new skincare formulations.

Natural Skincare:
From charcoal to collagen, numerous products that are typically found in food have made their way into personal care products, offering a wide range of health benefits. Representatives from GlobalData, Givaudan and Lubrizol highlighted how an increased public interest in organic and natural products is driving new skincare trends.

Daily doses of innovation and inspiration

Complementing the live webinars, in-cosmetics Korea Educational Week also showcased an array of innovative raw materials launched within the last six months.

Profiles of brand new, innovative personal ingredients were also available online to inspire new formulations and product development. Each product was accompanied by a video introduction from regional expert Mike Son of Reach24, who explored its unique benefits and explained how it can be utilised in innovative formulations.

Focusing on the latest local and global trends, scientific advances, and the newest product launches, Educational Week ran from 15 to 19 June.
