in-cosmetics Global has announced the details of its Sustainability Zone, a comprehensive space designed to help brands reduce environmental impact and enhance their sustainability credentials.

Sponsored by AAK and in partnership with The Green Chemist Consultancy and Ecovia Intelligence, the zone will provide invaluable opportunities to explore green solutions across four key areas; the Forum, Display, Theatre, and Pavilion; all of which will serve as a catalyst for learning, networking, and discovering sustainable solutions.

The zone will be led by leading organisations, including AAK, The Carbon Trust, Provital, the International Collaboration on Cosmetics Safety (ICCS), Givaudan, NATRUE, Syensqo, Carbonwave, and more, featuring interactive sessions, exhibits, showcases, and expert presentations.

The Sustainability Zone Forum, sponsored by AAK and curated by The Green Chemist Consultancy, will feature a two-day programme of expert-led discussions on green chemistry, regulatory compliance, life cycle analysis and ethical ingredient sourcing. Speakers will explore ways to drive sustainability improvements, minimise environmental impact and address unmet industry needs, offering valuable insights into sustainable practices across formulation, packaging and beyond. This year, the Forum will be located on the show floor, ensuring better accessibility for attendees.

Speakers from The Carbon Trust will share insights into ways the beauty industry can update its practices to align with net-zero targets and avoid greenwashing in ‘Navigating Net Zero: Communicating with Credibility in the Context of the EU Green Claims Directive.’ Delving into the benefits of upcycling, Judit Camargo, Founder & CEO of Roka Furdada, will explore the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-acne properties of Sotabosk, a lignin-based cosmetic ingredient derived from upcycled biomass byproducts, in the session, ‘Roka Cirkle Sotabosk: Redefining Sustainability Through Upcycling.’

The interactive Display area, sponsored by AAK, will spotlight product advancements in sustainable personal care. This space will feature display pods showcasing sustainable projects and initiatives as well as responsibly sourced raw materials that deliver high performance and a reduced environmental impact, with exhibitors such as Oleon NV demonstrating the benefits of recyclable and reusable esters produced by enzymes. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the latest innovations in sustainability and gain insight into the industry’s most forward-thinking solutions from suppliers like Provital, Nouryon, AAK Sweden and many more.

The Sustainability Theatre will provide a platform for expert insights, with leading voices from AAK, Lanxess Deutschland, Beauty Kitchen and others discussing eco-design and transparent, responsible sourcing in ingredient formulation, circular economy strategies, and how reducing Scope 3 emissions can make a significant difference to a brand’s environmental impact.

Kicking off the Theatre programme on day one, Dr. Barbara Olioso, Managing Director of The Green Chemist, will explore the transformative role of sustainability in cosmetics development in ‘Regenerative Beauty with Green Chemistry,’ highlighting the importance of eco-design in formulation, ethical ingredient sourcing, and sustainable packaging, offering insights into how circular design strategies and groundbreaking materials can shape a greener, more equitable future for beauty. Other speakers, such as Jacques Courtès, Senior Account Representative, Transparency-One and Dr. Sophie Roelants, COO and Co-founder of AmphiStar will delve into the finer details of how brands can use data and innovative new ingredients to meet net-zero targets and preserve the environment’s natural biodiversity.

Courtès from Transparency-One will present ‘Mapping your Supply Chain and Tackling Worldwide Regulations,’ exploring how industry leaders effectively manage supply chains and social risks and track progress toward ESG goals. The session will demonstrate how businesses can stay compliant with evolving global regulations by efficiently collecting supplier documentation, certifications, and necessary compliance data.

In ‘Sourcing & Valuing Low Carbon Products,’ Kelly Gilroy, VP Commercial Sustainability at Univar Solutions, will explore the growing market demand for low-carbon products and the crucial role of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data in helping brands achieve their sustainability goals.

Mélanie Marquis Schiffer, Sustainability Project Manager at Symrise, will discuss the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in, ‘Integrating Planetary Boundaries into Portfolio Management and Driving Innovation Toward a Sustainable Future.’ The planetary boundaries framework defines the ecological limits within which humanity can safely operate, while preserving natural resources and ecosystems. Symrise utilises this framework to highlight how companies can strive to reduce carbon emissions, conserve biodiversity, and ensure responsible sourcing of raw materials.

Dr. Roelants from AmphiStar will lead ‘From Waste to Wonders: Bringing Performing and Affordable Biosurfactants to the Market,’ discussing the creation of microbial biosurfactants from locally sourced waste and side-products, such as supermarket food waste, from the agri-food industry. These circular biosurfactants serve as drop-in replacements for traditional ingredients, without competing with food production or impacting land use, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of finished products.

The Sustainability Pavilion will be a hub for connecting with experts and suppliers in sustainable beauty practice. Covering consultancy, accreditation, packaging, distribution and life cycle analysis, companies like Ecovia Intelligence, Fairglow and Natrue will showcase solutions that enhance transparency and reduce environmental impact across the supply chain.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director, in-cosmetics Global, said: “Sustainability has been a core part of the beauty industry for a long time, and it’s essential to keep pushing for new solutions that benefit both consumers and the planet. Whether through innovative technologies, alternative solutions, or new ways of sourcing and creating ingredients, the Sustainability Zone offers an expansive hub for the personal care community to explore these new, creative ideas. It also helps ensure the industry is prepared for evolving regulations and policies while supporting companies in making the necessary changes to stay ahead.”

14 NOVEMBER, AMSTERDAM: in-cosmetics Global, the leading global event for personal care ingredients, has announced that the 2025 show will return to the RAI Amsterdam, the Netherlands from 8-10 April next year. Poised to be its most international event yet, the show – presented by KSM-66 Ashwagandha – will host over 1,000 exhibitors showcasing the latest advancements in science, innovation and sustainability to drive the next wave of cosmetic creations.

With the global beauty market projected to reach approximately $580 billion by 2027[1], Europe – along with the USA – remains one of the largest beauty markets[2] worldwide. Despite moderating global inflation in 2023, consumers are adopting a more deliberate purchasing approach to maximise their reduced disposable income. In the current climate, they are seeking value through discounts, social media deals, and ‘deinfluencers’ who highlight overhyped products, leading to a rise in competitively-priced dupes – especially among Generation Z[3].

Helping cosmetics brands and manufacturers navigate evolving needs of beauty consumers, industry leaders like BASF, Lubrizol, Symrise, Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, Givaudan Active Beauty, Ashland, GFC Life Science, Evonik, and Croda will showcase innovations addressing current shifts in the sector.

Plus, new exhibitors from around the world – including Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, Korea, China, and India – will be showcased in a dedicated hall as they aspire to become key players in the international personal care ingredient market.

Addressing evolving market trends and priorities

The event will feature multiple product areas and conference theatres, including the Marketing Trends Theatre, Sustainability Zone, Innovation Zone, Fragrance Zone, Sensory Bar, Make-Up Bar, Technical Seminars, Testing and Regulations Forum, Formulation Lab, and Testing Discovery Pavilion. Each area will spotlight evolving industry priorities, driving the sector forward to formulate products that delight customers and align with their values, drawing upon the best in cosmetic science excellence, pioneering technologies, and sustainability efforts.

This edition, the Marketing Trends Theatre will be organised into three key themes: day one will focus on the European and global market, innovation, and ingredient trends; day two will spotlight key and emerging trends like wellness and dermocosmetics; whilst day three will address the business of beauty and the future of the industry.

The Sustainability Zone, sponsored by AAK, will showcase the latest in green beauty, with sustainable sourcing solutions and eco-friendly formulations shaping the industry’s future. Following its launch last year, the Sustainability Zone Forum – curated by Dr. Barbara Olioso, CEO of The Green Chemist Consultancy and in-cosmetics Global’s Sustainability Advisor – will return in an expanded two-day format on 8–9 April 2025, now located on the show floor to enhance accessibility. The Forum will cover key topics, including regulatory shifts, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), and sustainable packaging.

Additionally, Symrise, Mibelle Biochemistry, Probiotical and more will offer attendees exclusive insights into key trends impacting the cosmetics sector, such as skin screening and protection, mood-boosting neurocosmetics, and femcare in the R&D Tours.

Exploring innovation, sensory experiences, and testing advancements

The popular Innovation Zone, sponsored by Ashland, will spotlight state-of-the-art ingredient launches as suppliers showcase their major debuts in Functional and Active ingredients, reflecting the extensive hours and investment behind these innovations. The Mintel Live Demos within the Zone will highlight finished products of key trends and technologies shaping the future of beauty, offering data-driven insights and strategic recommendations.

Additional Zones at in-cosmetics Global 2025 will include the Fragrance Zone, where prestigious fragrance houses, producers, and ingredient distributors will showcase exquisite aromas and fragrances. At the nearby Sensory Bar, attendees can discover transformative sensory experiences through innovative personal care formulations.

Elsewhere, the Make-Up Bar will inspire the next generation of colour cosmetics, featuring novel pigments and formulations for eyeshadows, foundations, nail varnishes, and lip lacquers, all available for safe testing. These interactive spaces are designed for R&D specialists to explore unique sensations and discover technologies and bold colours from exhibitors including Luzi, IFF, Eurofragrance Iberchem S.A.U and MG International Fragrance Company.

New for 2025 is a strengthened focus on developments in testing and regulatory standards, designed to help brands substantiate claims, efficacy and science-backed beauty standards. On day three of the show, the Sustainability Zone Forum will transform into a pop-up Testing and Regulations Forum in partnership with Skinobs, tackling the latest regulatory updates, providing essential insights on product testing, and guiding attendees through the intricacies of policymaking. This will also feature exclusive content on the latest advancements in testing, including specialised sessions on longevity and anti-pollution efficacy. The Testing Discovery Pavilion and Boost Your Test initiatives – also in partnership with Skinobs – will provide a dedicated space to explore these latest testing methodologies.

Additionally, the Technical Seminars provide attendees with free access to explore the latest ingredients and technologies, with sessions that delve into specifications, scientific data and evidence that highlight how suppliers’ innovative concepts can elevate product development strategies. Presentations will feature top suppliers like LipoTrue, Eastman, Vantage Personal Care and Sytheon.

Meanwhile, the Formulation Lab®, sponsored by Brenntag and managed by award-winning cosmetic scientist, Lorna Radford, will give formulators a hands-on experience formulating with new ingredients, enabling them to refine their skills and experiment with emerging techniques.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Global, said: “We’re excited to return to the Netherlands next year for in-cosmetics Global 2025. The Dutch, German and Nordic nations represent significant and influential beauty markets and for 2025 we’re particularly excited to deepen our engagement with these important regions.

“As always, science, innovation, and sustainability remain the backbone of the industry, and the event will continue to support Europe’s leadership in cosmetic science. We look forward to showcasing the very best in cosmetic science, with expanded show programmes and fresh opportunities for collaboration.”

-Organisers reveal details of biggest event in show’s history-

21 NOVEMBER, BANGKOK: in-cosmetics Asia 2024, the leading event in Asia Pacific for personal care ingredients, drew nearly 20,000 visitors (including revisits) when it took place in Bangkok from 5-7 November 2024, making it the biggest event in the show’s history.

Boasting 13,103 unique attendees (11% up on 2023), the event also recorded a new high of 43% international visitors. In total, 5,591 attendees travelled from beyond Thailand, marking a 19% increase compared to 2023.

Overall, the event at BITEC featured 637 exhibitors, including major multinational ingredient suppliers like Ashland, BASF, Clariant, and Croda. Dynamic and niche suppliers from 36 countries – including Australia, Brazil, Egypt, and the United States – showcased their innovative ingredients, targeting the expanding opportunities in the Asian market.

Looking to the future

This year’s exhibition was a true celebration of innovation, with many companies using it as a launchpad for their latest product developments. Eurofragrance showcased Scentphony, a sensory collaboration blending fragrance and music, while Kaffe Bueno introduced KLEANSTANT®, a bio-based anionic surfactant upcycled from coffee by-products, used in shampoos, body washes and cleansers. LipoTrue also introduced two new ingredients: Deepstrine, a marine ferment aimed at nurturing and repairing stretch marks and Lightmony, a botanical blend designed for a radiant glow.

For the first time ever, the Innovation Zone, sponsored by Mibelle Biochemistry, reached a significant milestone with 100 brand new ingredients launched within the last eight months. Entries were automatically entered to the Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards. Givaudan secured Gold in the Actives category for Neuroglow™, an ingredient which mimics the beneficial properties of sunlight. In the Functional category, Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant took home Gold with Pickmulse™, the first quinoa starch-based ingredient allowing easy formulation of Pickering emulsions.

Learning from the best

The event united R&D experts from across the region, including representatives from P&G, L’Oréal, Shiseido, Estée Lauder, Unilever and Amorepacific who came together to network with industry peers, hear about upcoming trends, and meet with current and potential business partners. Future industry trends were a key focus of the educational programme, with themes such as technology, science-backed beauty, AI, and anti-ageing solutions, as well as K-Beauty, C-Beauty and T-Beauty.

One of the most popular sessions was led by KinShen Chan, Principal Beauty and Personal Care Analyst at Mintel, looking at ‘2025 global beauty and personal care trends.’ Chan highlighted expected growth in the Southeast Asian cosmetics industry, pinpointing three significant trends: consumers will “work smarter, not harder,” leveraging knowledge, tools, and technology for personalised, high-impact solutions; they will prioritise eco-ethical practices, connecting sustainability with high-performance beauty; and adopt ‘slow beauty,’ focusing on prevention over repair and embracing simplicity.

This year marked the debut of in-cosmetics Asia’s first Cosmetic Conference, held in association with the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Scientists (IFSCC) and sponsored by dsm-firmenich. Featuring experts from IFSCC, L’Oréal, Shiseido and Shieling Laboratories, the conference focused on key topics like AI, skincare, and haircare, with a keynote from Perry Romanowski, Chair of Education at the IFSCC.

There were further science-based sessions held in the Formulation Lab with 10 action-packed presentations showing attendees how to formulate finished products. These included a packed demonstration by Clariant on encapsulated UV filters that enable lightweight, high-protection, flexible sunscreen formulations UV filter system, as well as Nikko Chemicals running a training session on Skinified serum sunscreen with a combination UV filter system.

The rise of Asian suppliers

The 2024 edition highlighted the growing prominence of Asian suppliers, as European companies increasingly turn to the region for sourcing and local operations, in part due to global political uncertainty and supply chain disruptions.

Several leading companies demonstrated the significant strides being made in ingredient innovation and product development, evidenced by Singapore-based Wilmar securing the Silver Award in the Innovation Zone Best Ingredients – Functional Category, while China’s Bloomage Biotechnology Corp., Ltd. earned Silver at the Spotlight On Formulation Award.

Japan also made a strong impact, with 23 exhibitors showcasing their advanced ingredients; notably, TriBeaute introduced AzePore™, a multifunctional moisturising, anti-ageing, and anti-acne agent, while Thailand’s Speciality Natural Products Public Company Ltd. presented a natural extract developed in collaboration with local agricultural networks.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director of in-cosmetics Asia, said: “This year’s event has emerged as an unparalleled hub of international influence, witnessing a 19% increase in attendance from outside Thailand, alongside a significant representation of brands from beyond the Asia-Pacific region. Most importantly, we are thrilled to see the flourishing collaborations and valuable partnerships that have taken root, fostering a profound sense of camaraderie among all attendees. in-cosmetics Asia 2024 stands as a pivotal milestone for both the business sector and the community within our industry.”

in-cosmetics Asia 2025 will take place from 4-6 November at the BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand. For more information or to register interest for the event, visit the website here. For images of the 2024 event, please click here.

in-cosmetics Asia, the leading event in Asia Pacific for personal care ingredients, has announced its full agenda for 2024, specially curated to welcome APAC’s best R&D scientists, creators and innovators.

Taking place on 5-7 November at BITEC in Bangkok, Thailand, the show will revolve around four key themes – science, innovation, trends, and community – shaping the programme as it serves as a catalyst for the industry’s future movements.

The 2024 edition will showcase the largest exhibitor participation in the event’s 15-year history, reflecting the growth of the industry in Asia, which is projected to reach $253.1 billion this year, 40% of the global market . Last year, the Asia Pacific region accounted for nearly a third (32%) of the global beauty and personal care market, led by its top four countries: China, Japan, India, and South Korea.

As these markets continue to rise in global influence, the event will feature strong representation from APAC, with over 200 of the 600 exhibitors introducing their innovations, and over 80 keynote sessions dedicated to exploring key themes within these regions.

Shanghai-based global ingredient supplier, COSROMA®, will present its Cosroma® FFJ-004, a nearly colourless and odourless solvent, moisturiser, and solubiliser which locks in skin moisture and reduces trans-epidermal water loss.

Jingkun Chemistry Company, a leading manufacturer for guar derivative products headquartered in Kunshan, will exhibit its guar derivatives for skincare and haircare, whilst KingPowder, one of the leading Chinese manufacturers of raw materials for colour cosmetics and skincare will showcase its array of products from its organic pigment pre-dispersion and surface treated pigments to its wet stripping boron nitride.

Tokyo-based Nikko Chemicals will introduce two new products: CC-880, a rice ball-shaped, 100% natural carbon-sourced powder that improves texture, prevents make-up breakdown, and eliminates sticky skin and Mineral UV filter dispersions. The dispersions offer high UV-blocking with enhanced transparency by controlling the particle size of TiO2 and ZnO.

Meanwhile, Osaka-based SEIWA KASEI will present Amitose™ 3LGA, a ceramide and glutathione booster; Vistanol™ GDHR-Pure, featuring botanical lanolin; and Promois™ WR-CAQ, an anti-frizz rice protein, amongst others. TriBeaute, known for developing unique active ingredients for skincare, haircare, and nutrition, will showcase Wasabi Flavone™, an anti-ageing ingredient, derived from the wasabi leaf extract (Wasabia japonica), which targets dandruff, scalp redness, and sebum while promoting hair growth.

Representing the K-Beauty industry, Humanchem Inc, will highlight several innovations, including HUSIL SILICA, a high-purity spherical silica powder; SNOW SAPPHIRE, a synthetic sapphire powder ideal for makeup and pearl pigments; and EXPHERE, a cross-linked polymethylmethacrylate powder. South Korea’s SUNFINE GLOBAL, will display its key product lines; the SunPEP Series, a collection of high-efficiency peptides designed to address fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing, and the Sunsorb/UVsol Series, featuring advanced sunscreen agents for cutting-edge protection against harmful UV rays.

Other exhibitors from the APAC region, such as Moksha, Ajinomoto, Gway Cosmetics, Hermosa Naturals Co., Ltd., and Ikeda Corporation, will be joined by global companies including Actichem from France, Mibelle  Biochemistry from Switzerland, Henry Lamotte Oils GmbH from Germany, Moellhausen from Italy, and many others.

Over 130 companies making their debut at the event will include AGRANA, an Austrian industrial group with global operations in fruit, starch, and sugar; Bernardi Group, a French producer of natural raw materials with sites in over eight countries; and CIDOLS, a specialty ester chemical manufacturer focusing on emollients and emulsifiers.

Introducing the Cosmetic Conference

This year marks the inaugural Cosmetic Conference, a new initiative in association with the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) and sponsored by dsm-firmenich. Running from 5-6 November, the Conference will bring together leading R&D experts from around the world to explore the latest advancements in high-level cosmetic science.

Featuring expert keynote speakers from L’Oréal, Shiseido, A*Star Skin Research Labs, Formulae 8, and more, the two-day event will focus on btechnical topics, including the microbiome, pigmentation, AI, and the role of beauty in ageing skin, catering specifically to scientific experts and industry leaders.

At the Conference, Perry Romanowski, Chair of Education at IFSCC and Vice President of Element 44 Inc. (USA), will lead the opening session, ‘The future of beauty: how AI will affect cosmetic chemists and formulation.’ Romanowski, widely regarded as an industry authority with broad expertise across multiple areas, and the public face of The Beauty Brains – a group of chemists with over forty years of combined experience at major cosmetics companies like Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Alberto Culver – will investigate how AI is revolutionising cosmetic formulation, shaping marketing narratives, and transforming ingredient research. He will also present ‘Haircare formulations: is innovation still possible?’ examining the latest advancements in haircare through historical examples and modern techniques.

Dr. Tarun Chopra, Director, Advanced Research at L’Oréal, will discuss ‘Microbiome sciences: from knowledge to effective dermo-cosmetic solutions,’ offering a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and opportunities presented by microbiome science in the cosmetic industry. His presentation will delve into the ecosystem of the skin microbiome, how it evolves over time, and how it interacts intimately with our skin’s biology and clinical condition.

Also at the Cosmetic Conference will be Tomo Osawa, Regional Asia Pacific Innovation Centre Director at Shiseido, who will deliver a presentation on ‘The power of beauty effect: well-being of the elderly.’ With Japan’s status as the country with the highest proportion of elderly citizens and the anticipated acceleration of ageing across Asia, Osawa will look into the profound impact of beauty on both physical and mental well-being in ageing populations.

In a separate session, Osawa will also address, ‘The power of beauty effect: well-being of people with skin concerns’, presenting research on how beauty interventions can significantly improve the wellbeing of individuals facing severe skin issues.

Tomorrow’s market trends

The Marketing Trends Theatre will boast 18 sessions on topics such as 2025 global beauty trends, AI’s impact on the personal care industry, sustainability, and ingredient trends in Asia, with insights from leaders at Mintel, Euromonitor, The K Beauty Science, Kline, Fashion Snoops, Innate Motion, Asia Cosme Lab, and more.

As AI plays an increasingly significant role in the beauty industry, driving innovation and change, Yann Chilvers, Founder and Co-CEO of Covalo, will delve into how AI is transforming the personal care sector in his session ‘10 ways AI is changing the personal care industry’. He will explore its impact on revolutionising work processes, redefining industry standards, and addressing skilled labour shortages.

Another of the most anticipated trends at the show will be the evolving perspective on ageing, with a growing emphasis on embracing the natural process and challenging unfair and unrealistic beauty standards.

According to Mintel’s 2024 APAC Beauty and Personal Care report , 24% of Chinese women aged 18-24 believe beauty brands often portray unattainable female images. In Japan, there is a notable shift towards accepting ageing while still valuing youthful looks, while South East Asia is addressing both the needs of older populations and educating younger consumers on healthy ageing.

Addressing this growing theme, Cilla Henriette, Business Humanizer and Partner at Innate Motion, will present her talk, ‘The meaning of ageing across life stages,’ investigating how the perception of ageing has shifted over time, noting that while ageing was once associated with turning 40, discussions about procedures like Botox are now emerging as early as one’s 20s. Henriette will explain how the highlights and challenges experienced at different life stages significantly shape our evolving understanding of ageing.

Additionally, Arpapat Boonrod, Ph.D., Managing Director Client, TH and Head of Growth SEA at Kantar, will present the session titled, ‘Beauty trend Thailand: the new, the old, and the future,’ offering insights into how Thailand is redefining beauty standards to celebrate “ageing with grace”.

Other sessions will focus on emerging trends, offering attendees valuable insights and a comprehensive, future-gazing outlook at both current and upcoming developments. Pierre Zolghadri, Senior Business Development Manager for Asia-Pacific & the Middle East at Kline, will host a session, ‘Emerging trends and market dynamics of personal care ingredients in Asia’ providing an in-depth analysis of these key markets.

Mallory Huron, Director of Beauty & Wellness at Fashion Snoops, will discuss ‘Top wellness trends influencing the beauty market’, while KinShen Chan, Principal Beauty and Personal Care Analyst at Mintel, will talk about critical trends to monitor now and in the future in his session, ‘2025 global beauty and personal care trends’.

Expertise in every corner

This year, the Innovation Zone, sponsored by Mibelle Biochemistry, will feature over 100 new ingredients from the likes of Ten Co., Ltd, Special Chemicals, and more. Demonstrating an array of both functional and active ingredients – all of which have been launched within the last eight months – visitors can explore, test and experience these advancements firsthand. Spotlighted ingredients will be entered into the prestigious in-cosmetics Asia Awards.

Elsewhere, the Formulation Lab, presented in association with Shieling Laboratories, supported by Namsiang as well as equipment partner IKA, will offer attendees a chance to enhance and perfect formulation skills in an interactive environment. Experts from Clariant, Ashland, Nikko Chemicals, Innospec, and more will lead laboratory sessions with hands-on instructions in formulation techniques, with a particular focus on UV and suncare products, including encapsulated filters for ultra-light sunscreens with high UV protection.

The Technical Seminars are crafted for personal care creators and R&D, offering highly advanced insights into new ingredients and technology from companies like dsm-firmenich, LipoTrue, Mibelle Biochemistry, Hallstar Beauty, Gattefossé Asia Pacific, and ICHIMARU PHARCOS. The sessions will provide a deep dive into personal care ingredients, with a focus on key trends such as glass skin, peptides, fragrance ingredients, and exosomes.

Notable sessions include Ryutaro Matsubayashi from SEIWA KASEI, who will address TikTok’s “glass skin” trend in his presentation, ‘How to get glass skin without make-up: increasing inner ceramide & glutathione.’Julie Droux from Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant will explore ‘A new era of peptides: a natural cyclic peptide with retinol-like properties,’ highlighting the growing global market for retinol-based cosmetics and the stability benefits of cyclic peptides.

Additionally, Dr. Fred Zülli from Mibelle Biochemistry will present his session titled, ‘Exosomes: structure, function, and cosmetic application,’ discussing the role of exosomes in cell communication and their emerging applications in regenerative medicine and anti-ageing cosmetics.

Another key session, ‘From traditional to sustainable – tailored solutions for effective preservation,’ will be led by Dr. Adrian Cheong from LANXESS. Cheong will explore the range of LANXESS’ preservatives options and how they can be tailored to meet different formulation needs.

Shining a light on skin protection

in-cosmetics Asia’s ‘Spotlight On‘ returns with a new emphasis on the rapidly growing global trend of Skin Screen, divided into four key subcategories: skin protection (SPF, blue light, anti-pollution), skin repair and healing (anti-inflammatory), skin support and maintenance (microbiome, probiotics, vitamins), and skin change and alteration (anti-ageing, lightening, brightening).

As the importance of protecting skin from UV rays and cancer risks gains momentum, this trend continues to rise, driven by increasing rates of skin conditions like acne, allergic reactions, and dermatitis. Mintel’s 2024 report highlights that the surge in skin issues has led to a boom in products marketed as sensitive skin-tested and noncomedogenic, with new launches targeting specific concerns like redness and acne.

Claims for sensitive skin-friendly products rose from 26% to 35% between 2021 and 2023, while the percentage of Chinese consumers reporting sensitive skin increased from 35% in 2021to 41% in 2022, remaining steady through 2024. Additionally, the report reveals over half of Thai consumers (52%) describe their facial skin as sensitive, with elevated air pollution driving interest in skin protection and sensitive skin treatments.

Exhibitors including Ashland Singapore, Bloomage Biotechnology Corp, Spec-Chem Industry, MyMicrobiome, IMCD APAC, Galaxy Surfactants, and Clariant Singapore will introduce their latest advancements in anti-inflammatory products, microbiome support, probiotics, skin lightening, blue light therapy, and more, through the dedicated Spotlight On seminars. All formulated ingredients on show will compete in the prestigious in-cosmetics Asia Awards.

9 Faces of the APAC Beauty Industry

Brand new this year, in-cosmetics Asia introduces the inaugural 9 Faces of the APAC Beauty Industry 2024 initiative, celebrating professionals who have made significant contributions to the region’s personal care industry. The initiative aims to highlight the remarkable individuals driving innovation and success in the Asia Pacific beauty sector, including R&D professionals, scientists, innovators, and role models.

The 9 Faces will be selected by an expert judging panel including Dr. Oliver Hofmann, Technical Advisor of in-cosmetics Asia, Dr. Kilala Tilaar, CEO of Martha Tilaar Group, and Dr. Awanthi De Silva, Innovation Manager at Vitex Pharmaceuticals. Winners will receive a certificate, recognition, and will be honoured at the in-cosmetics Asia Awards.

The in-cosmetics Asia Awards celebrate the most innovative ingredients from the Innovation Zone and Spotlight On categories. Judged by a panel of international R&D experts, the awards recognise standout ingredients launched in the last eight months of the show. This year’s ceremony will be held on 5 November at 17:15.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director of in-cosmetics Asia, said: “in-cosmetics Asia is a celebration of all things personal care. It’s where the entire industry comes together to share, inspire, and showcase the latest and greatest innovations not just from the APAC region but across the globe. This year, we’re pleased to announce we will have our largest group of exhibitors ever, making it one of the most exciting events we’ve seen. With new additions like The Cosmetic Conference, offered free to all R&D professionals in the APAC community, we’re elevating our educational and networking opportunities to an entirely new level.”

As AI and virtual reality become integral to the beauty industry, the Cosmetic Conference will explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the cosmetics market, valued at $3.22 billion in 2022 and predicted to reach $15.75 billion by 2031 .

Bringing this to life at the show, industry expert Perry Romanowski, Chair of Education, IFSCC & Vice President, Element 44 INC, will discuss how AI is reshaping cosmetic formulation in the Conference’s opening session, The future of beauty: How AI will affect cosmetic chemists and formulation. Romanowski will deliver insights into how AI is being used to prop up marketing stories and impacting ingredient research and formulation processes.

Additionally, Romanowski will examine the latest advancements in haircare, exploring product innovation through historical examples and modern techniques in the session, Haircare formulations – is innovation still possible? on day two of the Conference.

Quality of life

Addressing the rise of ‘cosmetic camouflaging’ and other solution-focused trends, Tomo Osawa, Regional Asia Pacific Innovation Centre Director, Shiseido, will share insights on “The Power of Beauty” effect – Well-being of the elderly. With Japan boasting the highest proportion of elderly citizens in the world, Asian countries will also see ageing accelerate in the future. In this presentation, Osawa will highlight the impact of beauty on physical and mental functions in ageing populations.

In his other presentation on “The Power of Beauty” effect, Mr Osawa  will introduce the influence of the power of beauty on the well-being of people with deep skin concerns.

Fact over fiction

With misinformation rampant and editing apps distorting reality on social media, a key theme of the Conference will be to help formulators identify false information. Danilo Lambino, Founder and Director of Formulae 8 Pty Ltd, as well as an Inventor, Cosmetics Formulator, Visual Artist, and Beauty Technology Entrepreneur, will deliver a two-part presentation under the theme, Making smart ingredient choices for new product development.

In part one, Lambino will delve into the significance of choosing the right ingredients by emphasising the need for accurate and trustworthy ingredient information. Meanwhile, part two will see the emphasis placed on the importance of fact-checking and verification as essential tools to make informed and intelligent ingredient choices.

Microbiome Magic

According to the Skin Microbiome in Healthy Ageing (SMiHA) Network , around 50% of the UK population suffer from microbiome-associated skin complaints annually, such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or acne.

At this year’s in-cosmetics Asia and Conference, the microbiome and its role in skin barrier function and health will be a focal point. Dr. Tarun Chopra, Director of Advanced Research at L’Oréal Singapore, will lead sessions on Microbiome Sciences: From knowledge to effective dermo-cosmetic solutions and Understanding and managing skin tone and pigmentary disorders.

Additionally, Dr. Thomas Dawson, Deputy Executive Director, A*Star Skin Research Labs, will host a masterclass on Microbe/Host interaction on human skin: The importance of lipids in skin health. Attendees will learn about the crucial role of lipids in skin health whilst, in his second presentation, he will address the metabolic regulation of the anagen hair follicle.

Elsewhere, Dermatological and Medical Consultant, Dr. Romun Leaovitavat, will lead an insightful discussion on Unlocking the essence of skin-ageing: Morphology, skin barrier and function. This session will introduce Conference attendees to the underlying cellular characteristics of skin-ageing and senescence-associated skin phenotype and will leave delegates with a solid understanding of how to fight ageing.

Slapping on the SPF

Suncare remains a hot category in beauty and personal care, with global suncare product values projected to grow by 4% annually until 2028 .

Driven by the surging popularity of outdoor activities and heightened awareness of UVA and UVB radiation risks, sunscreen brands are innovating their formulas to cater to specific markets. For instance, China’s sunscreen market is expanding rapidly, outstripping the overall beauty sector’s growth. Brands are responding with sensitive-skin friendly, alcohol-free options, and products that provide blue-light protection with integrated skincare benefits .

Delivering a session on this pressing topic, Dr. Oliver Hofmann, Official Technical Advisor, in-cosmetics Asia & Technical Director, Shieling Laboratories, will present What is SPF, how does it work and is there more to consider for effective protection? outlining key insights on achieving adequate protection without merely chasing high SPF numbers.

Commenting on the new Cosmetic Conference, Robert McPherson, Presidium member, IFSCC, said: “Collaboration between in-cosmetics Asia and the IFSCC makes total sense, as we complement each other perfectly. With over 16,000 members worldwide, the IFSCC is dedicated to advancing cosmetic research and fostering innovation. Joining forces allows us to provide unique insights and cutting-edge information to showcase the latest developments in our field. This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to drive the industry forward through collaboration and mutual support.”

Sarah Gibson, Event Director at in-cosmetics Asia, stated: “The APAC region is experiencing a pivotal moment as the beauty industry celebrates one of its most successful years on record. With Asian beauty making significant inroads into Western markets, it’s crucial for the sector to influence this market dominance. We encourage the industry to join us at the Cosmetic Conference for an inspiring, free-to-attend programme that promises to expand the frontiers of cosmetic science and technology, offering unparalleled opportunities for networking, learning, and growth. in-cosmetics Asia is known for the quality of its educational content, and with this new addition, we are keen to ensure science is accessible to all like never before.”

The full Cosmetic Conference programme, including the speaker biographies and abstracts, are available on the in-cosmetics Asia website here.

in-cosmetics Asia 2024 will take place at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC), in Bangkok, Thailand from 5-7 November 2024. in-cosmetics Asia, the leading event in Asia Pacific for personal care ingredients, will return to Thailand in November, as the region’s beauty industry celebrates one of its most successful years on record.

Currently leading the way as one of the biggest beauty markets in the world, accounting for almost a third (32%) of worldwide retail sales (US$570 billion)(*1), APAC is dominating the global sector with a revenue share of $181 billion (*2). This provides the perfect backdrop for the return of in-cosmetics Asia from 5-7 November 2024.

Taking place at BITEC, Bangkok, the event comes at a time when major beauty markets in the region have surged on the international stage; K-Beauty, J-Beauty, and C-Beauty have swooped Western markets, followed closely by emerging markets in Southeast Asia.

Reflecting this surge, interest in the show has skyrocketed, with the event’s website traffic from across APAC up by a staggering 277% year on year. The launch of a new Thai website and a WeChat account, alongside intensified targeting of prospects via digital platforms and partnerships across the continent, underscore this growing interest.

in-cosmetics Asia 2024 will welcome over 650 exhibitors from across the globe, the largest number in the show’s 15-year history. These include some of the top 10 suppliers, from Ashland, Croda, and dsm-firmenich, to Evonik, Clariant, and Lubrizol. Additionally, the event will feature 79 new exhibitors and more in a dedicated New Exhibitor Zone.

Encompassing four key focus areas, this year’s event will hone in on science, innovation, trends, and community, ensuring visitors gain unparalleled insights into the latest developments and directions of the industry in the APAC region and beyond.

Aligned with both growing and emerging consumer trends, anti- ageing and well-ageing, health and wellness, natural beauty, sophisticated simplicity, and neurocosmetics will be prominent themes seen throughout exhibitors’ showcased products and the extensive, informative educational programme.

Spotlight On Skin Screen

With climate change impacting skin health and consumers becoming increasingly concerned about melanoma, acne, atopic dermatitis, and other conditions, the demand for products that protect and preserve skin health is on the rise.

This year’s Spotlight On Skin Screen will offer interactive experiences for attendees to touch and test ingredients specially formulated for skin protection, repair, maintenance, and alteration.

Exhibitors including Ashland Singapore, Bloomage Biotechnology Corp, Spec-Chem Industry, MyMicrobiome, IMCD APAC, Galaxy Surfactants, and Clariant Singapore will present and discuss their latest advancements in anti-inflammatory products, the microbiome, probiotics, skin lightening and brightening, blue light therapy, and more.

All showcased ingredients will compete for the prestigious in-cosmetics Asia Awards.

Looking towards future trends

This year’s refreshed Marketing Trends and Regulation Theatre – a space to discover the latest cosmetic industry marketing insights, trends, and regulations – will offer visitors updated, not-to-be-missed insights, with sessions delving into topics such as global beauty, wellness trends in APAC; K-Beauty and C-Beauty, artificial intelligence (AI), botanical resources, and more.

Adding to the vast educational opportunities on offer, the Formulation Lab will return to host live demonstrations on formulating finished products using exhibitor ingredients. In addition, the expert-led Technical Seminars will provide comprehensive overviews of key personal care ingredients shaping the APAC beauty market, their benefits, and scientific substantiation of product claims.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director at in-cosmetics Asia, said: “This year’s in-cosmetics Asia returns at an exciting time; the Asian beauty market is booming, and it’s more influential than ever before. The show will once again act as a key hub connecting the region with broader global markets and help to facilitate collaboration in cosmetic R&D.

In response to last year’s international attendance, we are enhancing our multilingual, digital, and social media promotion across Asia Pacific to attract a continent-wide audience to this R&D epicentre. With growing interest in the region, we are dedicated to making the event a truly multi-cultural gathering for attendees from across the APAC region and beyond.”

“We are thrilled to report the highest visitor and exhibitor satisfaction scores in the history of the show from the 2023 exhibition, reflecting our strongest performance yet. For the first time ever, we’re running out of space at the venue, which is indicative of the market’s flourishing status.

Stay tuned for a major announcement on an exciting collaboration that is set to elevate scientific advancements and shape the future of beauty and skincare.”

in-cosmetics Asia 2024 will take place at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC), in Bangkok, Thailand from 5-7 November 2024. 9 May, Paris

in-cosmetics Global closed its doors on Thursday, 18 April after experts from across the globe converged in Paris to explore the latest advancements in the global cosmetic and personal care ingredients industry. The event saw attendance peak as it returned to the Porte de Versailles Expo with almost 12,400 visitors and over 1,000 exhibitors – an increase of 14.8% and 13.1% on 2023, respectively. International visitors travelled to the City of Lights from over 117 countries to network, learn, and discover new products and services.

AT-SHOW LAUNCHES

Sponsored by KSM-66 Ashwagandha, in-cosmetics Global serves as a launch pad for the industry to unveil its latest products, services, and insights. Industry giants such as Ashland, BASF, Clariant, Evonik, Lubrizol, Nouryon, and Symrise, alongside new exhibitors, start-ups, and SMEs, welcomed visitors to their stands for exciting announcements and launches.

Leading US-based personal care formulation expert, Grant Industries, unveiled three brand new active ingredients: its Granactive Retinoid™ Pro+, Bakuchiol Ester BCR, a natural retinol alternative and combination of Bakuchuyl Salicylate and Vitamin F Glyceryl Esters, and Gransense® TC-55C/C. Ashland launched three new products; perfectyl™ biofunctional, styleze™ es forza ingredient, and n-durance™ es-repair ingredient while Evonik presented its growing biosolutions portfolio, focusing on biotech actives and eco-friendly biosurfactants. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia-based Alula Peregrina, showcased its recently launched Virgin AlUla Peregrina™ Oil, rich in gondoic acid, which can be found in a number of luxury products on the market.

Among the notable innovations from the French market was Givaudan Active Beauty’s Silk-iCare, a vegan silk protein aimed at ‘protecting and repairing’ the skin. The company also unveiled Neuroglow, an active ingredient designed to safely replicate the positive effects of the sun and achieve a sought-after glow, along with Illuminyl 388, a highly potent skin-brightening prebiotic offering a range of benefits. Both Neuroglow and Illuminyl 388 were shortlisted for the in-cosmetics Global Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Award and were highly commended by the judges, with Givaudan praised for consistently leading the market with innovative new launches. Meanwhile, Actichem introduced Resvinia, a groundbreaking natural hair care ingredient sourced from upcycled French vine shoots.

In the Testing, Regulation & Lab Zone, Skinobs launched its Skinobs V2.0 platform, an enhanced version of the original aimed at optimising evaluation projects and expanding knowledge of tests. A webinar of the testing trends present in the Zone is available on demand.

Facilitating countless opportunities to connect, attendees were able to actively collect exhibitor and product details through the show’s digital Colleqt QR service and Emperia app, which enable attendees to access and download in-depth, technical specifications and information using their own smartphones. Across both platforms, nearly 200,000 connections (100,405 and 95,499 respectively) were made between exhibitors and visitors on the show floor. dsm-firmenich, Givaudan Active Beauty, SEPPIC SA, JRS – J. Rettenmaier & Söhne, Lubrizol Life Science, Solabia Group, Clariant, Syensqo, Croda, and Symrise were the top scanned exhibitors.

A PLACE TO LEARN, CONNECT AND EXPLORE

The event’s core pillars—science, sustainability, and innovation—were reflected in the show’s seven dedicated conference theatres which offered live seminars, interactive workshops, Q&As, and panels across the three days. Specialists from Mintel, Pierre Fabre, Mibelle Biochemistry, The Green Chemist Consultancy, Kline, Euromonitor International, Lubrizol Life Science and many more, touched on topics from cosmetic science and sustainability to technological advancement, AI, market intelligence, and beyond.

Over 90 Technical Seminars shared scientific findings and offered inspiration for new product formulations. Joonseok Cha, PhD, Research Director at The Garden of Naturalsolution, led a popular seminar on ‘Anti-ageing: Top to Bottom’, which focused on the emerging trend of ‘slow and well ageing’ over ‘anti-ageing’ as he noted that teenagers as young as 14-years-old are adopting practices to target wrinkles. Cha shared research findings on brown energy, Irish moss extract, Leafresh, and dokollagen, underscoring their potential in helping to slow the ageing process, naturally.

Paul Salama, Ph.D, Eng., CTO & Head of Innovation at Sharon Personal Care, delivered a seminar on ‘Harnessing the power of vitamins for combined antimicrobial preservation & skin benefits’, introducing its Sharon™ AQUAVITA, a next-generation multifunctional preservation, combining a clean-label system for antimicrobial efficacy with superior skin care benefits. Leading suppliers Nouryon, Ashland, Lubrizol Life Science, Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, Dow Silicones, plus many others guided R&D and lab staff from cosmetic and contract manufacturers, private labels, and indie brands through new and innovative formulation techniques, from water-in-oil emulsions and pigmented products, to customised all-natural serums and bio-based alternatives to traditional emulsifiers.

The R&D Tours explored Neurocosmetics, Advancement in Microbiome, and Skinification of the Scalp with sponsors Mibelle Biochemistry, Probiotical, and Symrise. Visitors were led across the expansive show floor to visit numerous exhibitors showcasing their solutions within these trends. Fred Zülli Ph.D., Founder of Mibelle Biochemistry, introduced the concept of emotional beauty and the emerging field of neuroscience, highlighting the link between skin and the brain mediated through the endocrine and nervous systems. Zülli unveiled TiMOOD, an ingredient sourced from a citrus fruit native to Nepal, which enhances cognitive function and skin appearance.

Bustling with crowds, the highly sought-after Marketing Trends Theatre revealed some of the key trends influencing the industry today; neurocosmetics, wellness, ageing, and natural beauty. Nikola Matic, Vice President of Chemicals Market Research at Kline & Co, provided insights into ‘The personal care ingredients market and its trajectory beyond 2024.’ He highlighted that despite challenges, the personal care ingredients market remains sizeable, estimated at approximately US$35 billion with moderated growth stemming from China. Looking ahead, Matic outlined that key trends and drivers will include multifunctionality, naturality, sensory experience, and sustainability with significant growth opportunities expected in India and Africa.

Belinda Carli, B Nat Therapies; Dip Cos Sci, Director, Institute of Personal Care Science, delivered a session on ‘The mind-skin connection: How to incorporate psychodermatology in cosmetic formulas.’ She emphasised the growing impact of stress in society, which affects consumers and their skin health, with around 40% of individuals with skin disorders also experiencing mental health issues. Carli noted some of the marketing and regulatory challenges in discussing the psychological impact of cosmetics, explaining that brands must navigate these regulations carefully while spotlighting high-performing ingredients to differentiate their products effectively.

A consistent theme seen throughout the event was wellness; a booming trend growing in multiple sectors. Lucie Green, Founder of Light Years, inspired attendees on how the trend is influencing innovations in the beauty industry, quoting that it will be driven by generations of consumers progressively incorporating wellness into their lives, be it through beauty, work, fashion, exercise, or sleep. According to Green, the wellness trend is rapidly expanding, projected to grow at a rate of 8.6% annually, reaching a value of $8.5 trillion by 2027.

Among the shortlisted contenders for the prize were Ascension Medical Biotechnology, Oriel Marine Extracts, Sethic Innovation Labs, and SupadElixir Co. Ltd.

LAYING A GREENER GROUNDWORK

Sustainability stood as a cornerstone of the show, showcasing the industry’s concerted efforts towards a greener, cleaner future. The Sustainability Zone, in partnership with The Green Chemist Consultancy and partnered with Ecovia Intelligence, featured exhibitors showcasing their new, natural, and organic innovations.

The Sustainability Zone Display area, sponsored by AAK , showcased 54 products, including BIONAP S.R.L’s OPUNTIA BIOCOMPLEX™ SH, a powder extract obtained from the juice of Opuntia cladodes; CURIE CO. INC’s Curamina™, a naturally derived bioactive bond-builder for the proteins that drive personal care and fashion and Green Ingredient Gold Award winner Boreal Bioproducts’ SpruceSugar™, a biodegradable, grease barrier film-former, anionic surfactant, and low viscosity modifier.

In the Sustainability Zone Theatre, Marie Marache, Mission & Impact Director at Groupe Rocher, and Clément Azam, CSR & Sustainable Development Manager at Pierre Fabre, discussed the ‘Green Impact Index’. They highlighted the growing consumer awareness of environmental impact, emphasising that consumers now prioritise brands that align with their values and will lose faith in those with unclear or untruthful sustainability claims.

In the Sustainability Zone Forum, curated by Dr. Barbara Olioso, Managing Director of The Green Chemist Consultancy – Professor Daniele Cespi from Toso Montanari Alma Mater Studiorum presented on integrating green chemistry with an LCA approach in ingredients development, while Emilija Balsyte, Fashion & Beauty Analyst at Euromonitor International, provided insights on consumer demands towards sustainability.

Also in the zone, the Sustainability Pavilion, powered by Farmforce, served as a dedicated space where attendees could identify and explore sustainable solutions across the entire cosmetics value chain. Against the backdrop of over half (52%) of visitors flagging their top sustainability goal as having greater ingredients and material transparency, the Pavilion provided the ideal hub for connection and collaboration. Farmforce, which enables businesses to trace and verify their supply chains and ensure ethical sourcing and environmental accountability, was joined by industry leaders, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and Ecovia, to

provide a platform for discovering solutions and suppliers committed to driving sustainability forward.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Global, said: “This year’s event was a resounding success. We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our exhibitors and visitors, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.
